A Boat Ride Colombo to Negombo on the Dutch Canal

The Dutch canal, which is also known as the Hamilton canal, runs all the way from Puttalam to Colombo, passing through Negombo. It was originally built in the 17th century by the Dutch to transport cinnamon and other goods. The British later improved it in the early 19th century to drain salt water out of the Muthurajawela wetlands.

This canal is about 14.5 km long and runs parallel to the coast, closer to the sea than the old canal. It has a rich history and biodiversity, as it passes through various scenic landscapes, such as mangroves, marshes, coconut plantations, and fishing villages.

Many people come to enjoy boat rides, birdwatching, fishing, and sightseeing along this historical waterway. There are many sights to see as you journey along the canal including famous landmarks such as the Dutch Fort, the St. Mary’s Church, and the Negombo Fish Market.

Our journey begins from the Port City in Colombo and you can see views of the city and the harbour as we make our way to the canal. The trip will be headed by our experienced captain who has travelled here all the way from the United States and will take you on a comfortable and enjoyable journey on a modern cruise boat which can accommodate up to 6 people.

You can also take along your luggage if it is not too excessive (according to the number of individuals and the weight and volume of baggage). If you wish to make this journey from Negombo to Colombo it can be arranged as well (Please contact us for any deviations and customisations).
